Expat on Bonaire

I am Robbert ’t Sas, a Dutch seafarer turned island entrepreneur, whose life story unfolds like an epic voyage from the vast oceans to the sun-drenched shores of Bonaire. It all began in the maritime world, where I trained as a deck officer “All Ships” and set sail as a cadet and third officer with Holland America Line, navigating colossal cruise ships across the globe.
Those years at sea were my forging ground, endless horizons, stormy challenges, and the unyielding rhythm of tides taught me the essence of service, safety, and resilience, skills that would later anchor my new chapter on a Caribbean gem.
Crossing Oceans to Island Shores
Picture this: after years of chasing sunrises from ship decks, I felt the pull of a permanent horizon. Bonaire called to me with its promise of turquoise lagoons, trade winds perfect for kitesurfing, and a laid-back rhythm far removed from the captain’s log. I made the leap in 2010, arriving with little more than my seafaring grit and a vision to build something authentic. From a modest setup, I founded Pickup Huren Bonaire, starting with a fleet of rugged pickups tailored for the island’s dusty trails and salt flats.
What began as a simple car rental evolved into a gateway for adventurers—offering everything from zippy compacts for town hops to heavy-duty 4x4s for exploring Washington Slagbaai National Park’s rugged interior. No deposits, rentals from age 18, free airport shuttles, and our exclusive Gold Driver loyalty program turned every handover into the start of someone’s unforgettable journey.
Adventures on Four Wheels and Wings
Life on Bonaire isn’t a job; it’s a daily odyssey. Dawn breaks with the hum of engines as I prep vehicles for guests eager to chase the day’s thrills—diving into crystal-clear reefs at 1000 Steps, kitesurfing the legendary waves at Lac Bay, or cruising to the flamingo-filled salt pans at Goto Lake. As a passionate kitesurfer and diver myself, I’ve mapped every hidden cove and wind-swept beach, sharing insider tips like the best sunset spots near Sorobon or secluded snorkel trails off the north coast.
My team, a vibrant crew of locals and expats, embodies that same island spirit, ensuring every renter feels like a friend. We’ve innovated too: think mobile beach showers for post-surf rinses and customized off-road packages that let visitors conquer Bonaire’s wild side without a hitch. Through it all, Pickup Huren Bonaire has grown into a trusted name, fueled by glowing reviews and repeat visitors who return like migrating birds.
Anchored in Paradise, Eyes on the Horizon
Bonaire isn’t just my business; it’s my heartbeat. From sea nomad to “King of Bonaire” contender in local kitesurf events, I’ve traded ocean swells for trade winds, building a legacy of hospitality that echoes my cruise ship roots. Today, as owner and face of the company, I lead expansions like new fleet additions and team hires, always prioritizing that seamless, worry-free experience. Whether you’re a first-time visitor or a seasoned sailor docking here, rent a pickup from me, and let’s co-write your Bonaire tale—one dusty road, one perfect wave at a time. The island awaits; your adventure starts when you turn the key.
